defrag vista compared xp

Defrag on Vista compared to XP

Hi all,
Just
wondering if the defrag interface found in Vista is to be the one they will release in the final version. (No visual input concerning anything really except the report that the drive does or doesn't need defragmentation.)
I'm asking this because after seeing from Vista that my main Vista drive didn't need defragmentation, when I came back to my WinXP pro partition, I decided to check with it's defrag tool to see how it looked.. turns out XP recommended a defrag (while Vista didn't) and after defragmenting it (wasn't sure if it would break Vista or not :), it turns out that now Vista is MUCH faster (disk wise of course) and there was a lot of defragmentation done as well.
That's it.. just wanted to share my experience with others as well as hoping MS will add a better interface (and perhaps a more efficient defrag would be nice as well). -- Rej

right now the vista defrag is broken, spins its wheels and accomplishes nothing.
you can check the fragment % from a command prompt by using defrag "drive" /a
it reports like ANALYZE in xp.
running defrag multiple times and checking using the /a shows it does nothing.

Would Diskeeper 7.0 or higher work in vista? Michael

No. Go to Diskeeper's home page and search their site for Vista. They have a beta of Diskeeper 10 Professional that you can download and install for free. It is much better than the Defrag that comes with Vista.

I looked through www.diskeeper.com and *only* found the Diskeeper 10 Professional 30 days trial - which denied being installed on Vista Beta 2 telling me it was for another OS.
Is there a special Diskeeper 10 Pro Beta?

And there you find the statement "Diskeeper 10 Professional now provides support for Windows® Vista CTP (builds 5381 and 5384) with a free public beta." and if you click on it you are led to the trial versions, not to a beta...

rOy I checked this out too. It only works for older builds (5270 & 5308),

and only for the 32 bit version of Vista, not 64 bit. Diskkeeper will only work on 64 bit versions of XP and Server 2003 for now. Oh well...

ahh, good stuff to know.. appreciate the info..(both the /a switch and the fact that the current Defrag isn't working). Will give Diskeeper 10 a try if the one I downloaded is indeed the one for Vista (site wasn't quite specific about the download proper).
Thx Mikey. -- Rej

Good to know.. I'll give it a try if I'm able to download the Vista Beta program (link brings you to trialware.. but perhaps it's still working in Vista.. about to install and see.. if it does work, I'll post it here).
Thx for input. -- Rej

Ok, first try didn't work.. I'll do as you specified and actually SEARCH for the keyword Vista.. perhaps it'll bring me to the correct link...
ahh, it worked... type in Vista in the search box (located in the upper right) to find the proper link.. (second link in the search result window).
Can't wait to try it out..
Thx much -- Rej

Still only a 30 day trial which kinda sucks for a beta.

Can you guys that have Diskeeper up and working on x64 give detailed instructions of what you did? I went to the site, and signed up for the Professional x64 version..which is listed as being Vista compatible. I link that I was sent was for: Diskeeper10_Professional64_TW_30day I tried to install as Admin, and it failed an OS check. I then clicked the Properties and set it for XP SP2 and Server 2003 and Run as Admin, it again failed the OS check...
EDIT: YOU HAVE TO SIGN UP AS BUSINESS, if you choose HOME, it will kick you to the standard versions!!!!

Heres a link. http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp

Thanks for the link and info. I downloaded and installed, and then defragged the C drive. No problems, so far. (32bit).
Where did you get a serial number to register it? I had to quit the registration with indications to try again but I haven't been able to find a serial number.
